September 2007
Dear Brother Knights and Families:
I hope all of you had a great and enjoyable summer. I announced a couple of months ago that our council has a website that is now up and
running. The address is www.kofc1121.org. Along with this new website you will now be able to contact the Grand Knight by email. The address is
GrandKnight@kofc1121.org. I am also pleased to announce that future newsletters will be able to be sent to your email address instead of having it
mailed to you. This will save the council time and money by cutting our postage fees. However, I know many of you don’t have the internet and some of
you don’t have a computer. You will still be able to receive the newsletter by mail as you always have in the past. This will not replace the mailing of the
newsletter. More information will be coming in the near future on how to sign up for this. The website is still a work in progress and is not completely
finished. If you have any questions or concerns please call myself or Tim Mathews.
Here are some important dates to keep in mind.
The 35th Annual M.R. Drive will be the weekend of October 12th & 13th. This is one of the largest charitable events the Knights of Columbus does
every year. Please say yes when called upon to help with this very important event or call Ken Diener at 239-9604. I want to thank Kenny for chairing
this event.
The State Knights’ Pilgrimage honoring Mothers and Family Life will be on Sunday, October 7th on the grounds of St. Patrick’s Church on Highway
5, in Laurie, MO. All Knights, mothers and children are invited to attend this event. For more information call me at 239-4402.
Our annual Awards Night will be held on Saturday, October 13th. The evening will begin with Mass at 4:30 pm at St. Gertrude Parish in Krakow.
Cocktail hour will start at 6 pm in the lower level of the hall, followed by dinner at 6:30 pm. The program will begin at 7:30 pm, where we honor 25, 50,
honorary and honorary life members. We will also announce our Knight of the Year. Please RSVP at the bar and how many in your party are planning
to attend by no later than Thursday, October 4th. I hope to see many of you there. Come out for a night of good food and fun. Again thanks to Ken
Diener for chairing this event.
The Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 14th at 7:30 pm downstairs in the council room. This is a very special night when we
remember in a special way our deceased brother knights who have passed away. All are invited to attend. Special thanks to Gene Roetheli for
chairing this event.
The next blood drive will be held on Monday, November 12th in the lower level of the hall, more information to come next month.
In sporting events, a special congratulations, to our softball team who placed third in nationals out of 14 teams. Also, congratulations to Tom
Westhoff and Charlie Mantle who won first place in their class at the State Horseshoe Tournament. We are all proud of your accomplishments.
Our next Fish Fry is September 28th to benefit St. Gertrude’s School and the final fish fry of the year will be October 26th and will benefit St. Ann’s
PSR. Donations of desserts are always appreciated. We could also use more help with cleaning and putting things away after 7 pm.
The Knight of the Month is Brian Knight and the Family of the Month is the Ray Shipley Family. Donald A. Elbert won the 50/50 drawing and Tom
Remillard won the attendance prize.
Keep in your prayers the sick and in distress and remember the deceased members of our council and their families.
This month’s thought is: “Service is the rent we pay for our room on earth.” Author unknown.
Respectfully submitted, .................................................................. Mark Filla, Grand Knight, 507 Oriole Lane, Washington, MO 63090, 636-239-4402

Insurance Department: Back to School
Is there anyone out there who has not noticed the absence of children on the streets during the day? No question about it, school has
reopened. Never before has more emphasis been placed on school costs – and how to pay for them. Sure, the Order has a scholarship program and a
student loan program and our Swift-Matthews Educational Trust Fund does answer particular needs. But most still must borrow money from banks in
order to finance a college education for their sons or daughters.
Costs, of course, are up. This comes as no great surprise. In fact, while most people loudly protest increases in food prices, taxes and costs of
other services, seldom do they oppose increase in the cost of education. Most parents seem to view college costs as an investment. They are investing
money in their children’s future. It has been definitely established that college graduates earn, on the average, from 1 1/2 to two times as much as non-
college grads. Perhaps this is the reason why costs are so infrequently questioned.
Wise members prepare for these expenses by planning for them in advance. I can tell you of a plan specifically designed with college in mind. It
enables you to plan, in advance, for your child’s college bills. It guarantees that if your child has the desire, the ambition, and the drive, he or she will
also have the money. Moreover, it has a feature that no other financial institution can offer. If you die, the money you had planned to save will still be
there.
Call me today to discuss these needs. I want to hear from you............................................................ Robert King, Sir Knight, 636-239-1016
